About the artist
Alice Thompson (she/her) established Kite Curiosities LLC in 2020 as an ongoing public project that combines kite-making, kite-flying, design, printmaking, teaching and creative placemaking. She made her first kite through a residency at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in 2009. She currently collaborates with schools, artists, outdoor spaces, community groups and organizations to offer joyful arts experiences that enhance the well-being of participants. She provides consulting services, facilitation of public art activities and tailored kite workshops for numerous partners in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
She holds a B.F.A. from Binghamton University (2004) and an M.F.A. from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (2006) with concentrations in drawing and printmaking. Her creative process is grounded in refined observational drawing skills and an extensive knowledge of historical and contemporary printmaking practices. Her work takes many forms, including kites and layered cut paper installations in windows.
Email Alice if you are interested in designing a custom kite workshop for your organization or family gathering. (It’s a great team-building or birthday activity.) In person workshops are limited to the Greater Philadelphia Area in Pennsylvania. Follow her work with kites on Instagram and Facebook @kitecuriosities.
Why kites?
Kite making and flying emphasizes balance and presence, offering a pathway to mindfulness and stress relief. Looking up at the sky unlocks a part of our perception that is connected to creativity, awe, spirituality, and focus.
